Thinking about Invisalign? Here's what you actually need to know

June 2, 2026

My experience from the first time I walked through the door has been extremely positive and my teeth have not looked or been this good for many years. My recent treatment (a crown) was carried out with the utmost care and skill and looks great.

Teeth straightening has changed a lot. Where the only real option once involved metal brackets, wires, and years of fairly visible hardware, most adults who want straighter teeth now ask about Invisalign first - and for good reason.

Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually move your teeth into position. They're virtually invisible when worn, they come out for eating and cleaning, and the treatment can often be completed faster than traditional fixed braces. It's become one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments in the UK, and at Treehouse Dental in Crouch End, it's one of our most requested too.

But there's something worth saying upfront: not all Invisalign treatment is the same. The results you get depend heavily on the skill and experience of the person overseeing your treatment. This post explains how Invisalign works, who it's suitable for, and why the clinical team behind your treatment matters more than most providers tell you.

How Invisalign works

Invisalign treatment works by using a custom series of clear plastic aligners, each one designed to move your teeth a small, precise amount. You wear each set for roughly one to two weeks before moving onto the next in the series, and gradually, your teeth shift into the position your orthodontist has planned.

The process starts with a digital scan of your teeth using an iTero scanner - a small handheld device that creates a precise 3D map of your mouth without any of the mess or discomfort of traditional impressions. From that scan, your treatment plan is mapped out digitally, which means you can see a preview of your projected result before you commit to anything.

The aligners themselves are made from a clear, medical-grade plastic. Most people can't tell you're wearing them unless they're very close up. You wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth. That's one of the reasons patients tend to prefer Invisalign to fixed braces - there are no dietary restrictions, and cleaning your teeth stays exactly the same as normal.

Treatment length varies depending on how much movement is needed. Minor corrections can be achieved in as little as three to six months; more complex cases typically take twelve to eighteen months. Your orthodontist will give you a realistic estimate at your consultation.

Why specialist oversight matters

Here's something the industry doesn't always make clear: Invisalign is a prescription product, and the quality of the outcome is almost entirely dependent on who designs and oversees the treatment plan.

Anyone with a general dental qualification can prescribe Invisalign, which is why you'll find it offered almost everywhere - from dental practices to high street chains to online providers who send aligners through the post. The aligners themselves are the same product regardless of where you get them. What differs is the expertise behind the planning.

At Treehouse Dental, Invisalign treatment is led by Dr Farooq Ahmed, a consultant-level specialist orthodontist. That distinction matters. A specialist orthodontist completes three additional years of postgraduate training specifically in teeth straightening beyond their general dental degree. Dr Farooq has treated a wide range of cases and brings that depth of experience to every treatment plan he designs.

The difference shows most clearly in complex cases - patients with significant crowding, bite issues, or asymmetries that a general dentist might not feel comfortable treating, or might plan less effectively. With a specialist overseeing your treatment, the planning is more precise, the results are more predictable, and any complications that arise are handled with clinical confidence.

Invisalign in Crouch End – what the process looks like at Treehouse

When you come in for an Invisalign consultation at Treehouse Dental, you won't be handed a brochure and asked to make a decision on the spot. The process is designed to give you everything you need to make an informed choice.

Your consultation starts with our Treatment Coordinator, who will take the time to understand what you want to achieve with your smile, walk you through the process, and answer any questions before you see the clinical team. All adults who come to Treehouse Dental for cosmetic treatment go through this step - it means you arrive at your clinical appointment informed and without having to rush through the basics.

The dentist will then carry out a full examination, including X-rays where appropriate, and an iTero scan of your teeth. That scan feeds directly into the ClinCheck software that Invisalign uses to model your treatment, so you'll be able to see a simulation of your projected outcome at or shortly after your first appointment.

From there, if you decide to go ahead, your custom aligners are manufactured and you'll start treatment. You'll have regular review appointments with Dr Farooq throughout - typically every six to eight weeks - to check progress and ensure everything is moving according to plan.

Is Invisalign right for you?

Invisalign is suitable for a wide range of cases, including:

  • Crowded teeth (where there isn't quite enough space for all your teeth to sit straight)
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Overbites, underbites, and crossbites
  • Previously treated teeth that have shifted over time

It works best for patients who are committed to wearing the aligners consistently. The 20 to 22 hours per day requirement isn't flexible if you want the treatment to work on schedule - aligners left in a case for hours at a time mean teeth aren't moving, and treatment takes longer as a result.

For patients with very complex orthodontic issues, fixed braces may still be the more appropriate clinical choice. Dr Farooq will advise you honestly at your consultation about which option gives you the best outcome, and won't recommend Invisalign simply because it's the more popular request.

If you've had orthodontic treatment before and your teeth have shifted since the retainer stopped being worn - which is extremely common - Invisalign can often correct the relapse without a lengthy treatment period.

Invisalign and your wider smile

One thing worth thinking about: teeth straightening often works best as the first step in a broader smile improvement, rather than the only one.

Straighter teeth are easier to clean and less prone to certain types of wear. They also provide a better canvas if you're considering any cosmetic work afterwards, such as teeth whitening or composite bonding. Many patients find that once their alignment is complete, a whitening treatment or some minor cosmetic refinements are all that's needed to achieve the smile they had in mind.

At Treehouse, we look at the whole picture, not just the one treatment you've come in for. If there are other options worth discussing, your Treatment Coordinator and clinical team will raise them, but there's never any pressure to do more than you want to.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Invisalign cost in Crouch End? The cost of Invisalign treatment varies depending on the complexity of the case and the length of treatment needed. Interest-free finance is available through Chrysalis. Book a free consultation at Treehouse Dental for a personalised quote.

Does Invisalign hurt? Most patients experience some mild pressure or discomfort when switching to a new set of aligners, which typically settles within a day or two. This is a normal sign that the aligners are working. It's generally described as a feeling of tightness rather than pain.

Can I eat normally with Invisalign? Yes. You remove the aligners to eat and drink anything other than still water, so there are no dietary restrictions at all. This is one of the most significant practical advantages Invisalign has over fixed braces.

What's the difference between Invisalign and other clear aligners? Invisalign is the original and most clinically established clear aligner system, with the largest body of clinical evidence behind it. Other systems exist, and some are considerably cheaper, but Invisalign's combination of proven results, the sophistication of its treatment planning software, and the experience of the clinical team makes it the benchmark by which others are measured.

Will I need a retainer after Invisalign? Yes, always. Once your treatment is complete, a retainer is essential to hold your teeth in their new position. Without a retainer, teeth will gradually shift back over time – this is normal biology, not a failure of the treatment. Your retainer options will be discussed at the end of your treatment.
